Medical degree from the Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria. General practice in a regional polyclinic, followed by an academic appointment in anatomy at the university.

1988–1992 · SOFIA → LONDON

PhD, Sofia. Postgraduate work, London

PhD in vascular biology, Medical Academy of Sofia. European Science Foundation and Gulbenkian fellowships in France and England, then postgraduate work with Julia Polak and Geoffrey Burnstock in London.

1994 · ST. LOUIS

Professorship at Washington University

Washington University School of Medicine. Over thirty years teaching anatomy and neuroscience to medical, graduate, nurse anesthesia and physical therapy students.

Landmark studies in Science

Two papers in the journal Science, on NMDA receptor blockade (1999) and ethanol-induced neurodegeneration (2000), with the anesthetic study of 2003. Together cited more than 6,900 times.
